Stop Putting it Off: Clean your oven – Tips for making it painless, yet effective

Proper Way to Clean an Oven

An oven is in most home kitchens. This appliance is used to bake various foods. The process of cooking meat often splatters grease inside the oven. Other foods often drip from pans on the oven’s surface. The high heat of this appliance causes the dripped residue to burn inside the oven. Grease can coat the interior of an oven causing it to heat poorly. Occasionally, the residue should be removed. Cleaning the oven will ensure that recipes cook properly. A clean oven is also more hygienic.

Self-cleaning Ovens

If the oven is self-cleaning, then it can be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s directions. This involves closing the oven door while it heats to a very high temperature. Sometimes plastic knobs must be removed to prevent damage due to melting. During this time the oven door locks to prevent dangerous burns. This means the appliance will be unusable for several hours. The extremely high temperature causes residue inside the oven to become ashes. The ashes are then removed with a moist cloth and thrown away.

Preparing to Clean

Many ovens do not have a self-cleaning feature. Harsh chemicals can damage the interior of the oven. The rubber seals around the oven door must receive special care. If there is a window in the oven door, then it can be scratched with abrasive cleaners. The appliances must be cool during the cleaning process. Open a window to assist in removing the odors of cleaners. Wear old clothing or a protective apron. Invest in special protective cleaning gloves.

Cleaning the Oven

There are harsh oven cleaning chemicals which can be purchased at brick-and-mortar or online stores. The fumes of these products can sting the eyes. When these chemicals get on skin they cause a burning sensation. In addition, these products can damage the metal or porcelain materials of the oven interior. The rubber gaskets of an oven should never be exposed to harsh cleaners. It is a great plan to use gentle homemade cleaners on an oven. Cleaning an oven frequently will prevent it from having built-up residue.

Gentle Homemade Oven Cleaner

It is easy and economical to make homemade oven cleaners. Ingredients are easy to find at a local store. Make sure the oven is cool before beginning the cleaning process. First remove the racks from the oven. These can be washed in the kitchen sink with dish detergent. Baking soda and salt can be sprinkled on the interior surface of the oven. Then spray a small amount of water on the mixture. Allow the cleaning mixture to remain on the oven surface for several hours. Then use damp paper towels to wipe away the cleaner and dirt.

Stronger Homemade Oven Cleaner

If an oven is extremely greasy and dirty, then a stronger cleaner is required. A homemade cleaning solution can be made and poured in a spray bottle. Hot water can be mixed with a small amount of Borax, dish detergent and white vinegar. This cleaning mixture can be lightly sprayed on the interior of the oven. Sprinkle baking soda on the wet surface. Reapply the liquid mixture with an additional light spraying. Leave the cleaning mixture on the oven surface overnight. The homemade cleaner and residue can be removed with moist paper towels the next day.
